Companies face up to the climate emergency
As the planet faces increasingly visible climate disruption, companies are called upon to play a key role in the ecological transition. B Corp certification, which embodies a new vision of business, places climate action at the heart of its requirements. But what impact does it really have on the fight against climate change?
What is B Corp certification?
B Corp certification is awarded by the non-profit organization B Lab to companies that meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. Unlike traditional environmental labels, B Corp takes a holistic approach: it assesses a company’s impact on all its stakeholders, including the planet.
According to B Lab, certified companies must complete a B Impact Assessment (BIA) covering five areas, including the environment. To be certified, a company must obtain a minimum of 80 points out of 200, a threshold that encourages continuous improvement.
B Corp and climate action: concrete results
B Corp certification doesn’t just recognize good intentions. It demands concrete, measurable action. One of the key areas is the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Several certified companies have committed to becoming carbon neutral or net zero, aligning themselves with trajectories compatible with the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
For example, companies such as Patagonia, Allbirds and Dr. Bronner’s have drastically reduced their carbon footprint through sustainable sourcing, energy efficiency and carbon offsetting policies.
B Lab also works with initiatives such as Climate Neutral to help companies credibly measure, reduce and offset their emissions. This alliance strengthens the B Corp community’s climate impact by facilitating access to carbon transition tools for SMEs.
Climate justice and inclusion: a systemic approach
The fight against climate change cannot be dissociated from issues of social justice. The B Corp community understands this. One of B Lab’s fundamental principles is to anchor climate action in climate justice. This means integrating the voices of marginalized communities, often the hardest hit by climate disruption, into business decisions.
Companies such as Sustain Natural and Taos Ski Valley illustrate this approach by involving local communities in their environmental initiatives or by supporting environmental justice projects. This model goes beyond simple GHG reduction: it aims for a just and inclusive transition.
A ripple effect to transform the economy
The B Corp model is not limited to companies that are already aware of the issue. It acts as a lever for systemic transformation. By encouraging other companies to adopt sustainable practices, influencing supply chains and creating a snowball effect across business sectors, certification helps shift economic norms towards greater sustainability.
What’s more, B Lab works internationally to influence public policy. In 2023, it contributed to the creation of regulatory frameworks recognizing mission-driven companies in several jurisdictions. The aim? To rethink the role of business in society, and make it a driving force for climate resilience.
A forward-looking certification
In the face of the climate emergency, B Corp certification is much more than just a label. It represents a profound commitment to a regenerative, inclusive and resilient economy. By equipping companies to make informed, responsible decisions, it transforms them into true agents of change.
