What Causes Climate Change?
Scientists agree that the recent warming of the planet is primarily the result of human activities. The pollutants we pump into our atmosphere are enhancing its ability to trap heat (the ‘greenhouse gas effect’) and increasing the earth’s temperature. Today's atmosphere contains 32 per cent more carbon dioxide, one of the main greenhouse gases, than at the start of the industrial era. This is largely due to burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas. Deforestation and modern intensive farming methods also contribute to the problem.
