Off does not necessarily mean off
Many electrical appliances (e.g. computers, screens, printers, TVs, microwave ovens, VCRs, stereos etc.) still consume energy once you’ve turned them off. The annual average standby energy consumption per Canadian household is about 425 kWh, which is equivalent to leaving a 45W light bulb on all year long. You can reduce this by unplugging appliances when they are not in use or by buying a power bar with and on/off switch and switching it off.
